| Things To Do: Karatsu Kunchi FestivalNov 2010 (annual)Floats called Hikiyama are the main attraction at the Karatsu Kunchi Festival, held all around the city. The towering constructions are hauled along Nishinohama Beach as spectators watch in amazement. The largest floats are nearly seven metres tall, weighing three tons. The designs attract locals and tourists alike with their gold and silver leaf lacquer finish. Lions, grampuses, samurai helmets, sea bream and hiryo (flying dragons) are created and shown off in the popular procession.
The oldest float surviving is the Akajishi red lion which was made in 1819. It has been repaired many times but still retains its original form today.
Don't miss the Otabisho Shinko, where 14 huge floats are pulled along the sand, while flutes and drums are played in the background. |
