| Things To Do: Battle of Secessionville Re-enactmentNov 2010 (annual)The Boone Hall Plantation hosts the Confederate Heritage Trust's re-enactment of the Battle of Secessionville. The three-day event commemorates the 16 June 1862, when the Federal army came close to capturing a vital position on nearby James Island. Only poor planning on the part of General Benham and the arrival of Confederate reinforcements foiled the attack and resulted in a victory for the outnumbered southerners.
The goal of the event "is not the glorification of war but the education of the next generation on the horror and tragedy of its consequences, that courage, honour and valour are personal traits we each possess, which we each must rely on when words fail and we are forced to pick up a sword." |
