Visitor Information

For advance information contact the Hampton Convention and Visitor Bureau, 1919 Commerce Dr., Hampton, VA 23666 (tel. 800/800-2202 or 757/727-1102; fax 757/727-6712). The bureau's visitor center shares quarters with the Hampton History Museum, where you can learn of the city's past. Open daily 9am to 5pm except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

For information about Newport News, contact the Newport News Tourism Development Office, 700 Town Center Dr., Suite 320, Newport News, VA 23606 (tel. 888/493-7386 or 757/926-1400; fax 757/926-1441). The walk-in Newport News Visitor Center is in Newport News Park, 13560 Jefferson Ave., west of Fort Eustis Boulevard near Exit 250 off I-64 (tel. 888/493-7386 or 757/886-7777). It's open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Newport News Park, 13560 Jefferson Ave. (tel. 757/888-3333), is the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi River and has one of the best campgrounds in Virginia.

Getting There

From Williamsburg, take I-64 East. To reach downtown Hampton, take Exit 267 and turn right on Settlers Landing Road and cross the Hampton River to the visitor center (a left turn at the exit will take you to Fort Monroe and the Casemate Museum via the village of Poquoson). To reach the Mariners' Museum, take Exit 258 and follow J. Clyde Morris Boulevard (U.S. 17) south; the museum is at the southern end of the boulevard. From Norfolk and Virginia Beach, take I-64 West through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel to these exits.

Amtrak (tel. 800/872-7245) has daily service to its station in Newport News.
