|  |  The OscarsStudio presidents, agents, producers, PRs, stars and filmmakers get together for a well-rehearsed orgy of mutual backslapping and publicity at the Kodak Theatre. The Oscars ceremony (Academy Awards) is, without doubt, the biggest movie-related media event in the world.The media talk it up for weeks beforehand, and TV crews broadcast the event to allegedly enormous audiences all over the world. The Oscars have generated some legendary moments - Marlon Brando's political protests, Gwyneth Paltrow's epic snivel and James Cameron's well-thought-out "I'm the king of the world" announcement among them - and, like it or not, this is the way Hollywood chooses to celebrate and consolidate its unchallenged domination of the world's box-offices.
From the 1941 Best Picture choice of How Green Was My Valley over Citizen Kane to the defeat of Goodfellas by Dances With Wolves, the Academy has made its fair share of decisions which, with hindsight, might be considered a little bit dodgy. Still, so has the Nobel Prize - and anyway, as David Thomson points out about Hollywood in general, it is "a board game played with real money" and "movies aren't the point any more" (it's all about synergy). |
