Charles Tiffany decorated the entire ground floor, one of only two Tiffany domestic interiors still intact and open to the public, making it a true gem.While living here Twain wrote Tom Sawyer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, often called the archetypal American novel. He also raised a family during his 1874-1891 tenure and carried on an active social life (his neighbour was Uncle Tom's Cabin author Harriet Beecher Stowe).
A treat to visit, the building epitomises the highly ornamented Victorian style that marked Gilded-Age America. |
