The date comes on the back of the singer's 2008 world tour, his first for 15 years. Leonard Cohen had already enjoyed critical and commercial success as a poet and writer before he embarked on his musical career with the release of his 1967 debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen.
With the release of the subsequent Songs From a Room (1969) and Songs of Love and Hate (1971), he established himself as an influential songwriter and major talent. Minimal, downbeat folk songs like Suzanne and Bird on a Wire examined important human issues.
Cohen's careers in music and literature have continued in tandem over the years, his songs imbued with a literary quality rare in the world of pop music and his poetry informed by a rich musicality. The timeless quality of his stripped-down material has enabled him to appeal to generations of new fans and he continues to produce compelling work. |
