|  |  King John's CastleThis impressive Norman castle was built in 1210 on the banks of the River Shannon, on the site of an older castle used by Gaelic locals to repel the raids of marauding Vikings. Now, at the heart of Limerick's UNESCO World Heritage Site of King's Island, it still stands sentinel and is open to the public.Visitors can walk the crenellated battlements and climb up the imposing round towers. Exhibitions on display illustrate how the castle was used as the instrument of Royal authority, where and how the soldiers lived and what life was like in the medieval courtyard.
Excavations of the 1000 year-old defensive site have produced over 1000 objects, which include a 750-year old gold stirrup ring, pottery and musket balls. |
