|  | Egmont National Park (Mount Taranaki)Covering 33,534 hectares, Egmont National Park in New Zealand boasts verdant forests, waterfalls, wetlands and fabulous views of the North Island's rural heartland. The majestic dormant volcano Mount Taranaki (also known as Mount Egmont) lies at the park's central point.Beside Taranaki there are two older volcanoes, Kaitake and Pouakai. First protected as a forest reserve in 1881, it was in 1900 that Egmont became officially a national park. Its flora dramatically changes the higher up the mountain you climb - from tall rimu and kamahi trees at lower altitudes via dense subalpine shrubs up to an alpine herb field.
The middle slopes are colloquially known as the "goblin forest" given the gnarled trunks and thick moss, while Ahukawakawa Swamp boasts various plants adapted to survive in acidic soils and very low temperatures. |

Egmont National Park is on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island and is very accessible. It is situated inland from the coastal towns of New Plymouth (to the north) and Opunake (to the southwest) and Stratford further inland to the east.
There are three road entry points to the park: Manaia Road to Dawson Falls; Egmont Road to North Egmont and Pembroke Road to Stratford Plateau. |
