First held in 1934, and held in North Carolina since 1978, the American Dance Festival brings international dance companies together for an unrivalled summer season, at Durham's Duke University.
The festival has an enviable reputation for premièring new choreography and during the event, approximately 450 professional and pre-professional dancers from around the globe unite at the ADF School for a spell of intensive training. Alongside workshops and talks based around the performances there are concerts, the International Choreographers Commissioning Program and the ceremony to present the Samuel H Scripps/ADF Award - established in 1981 and now worth US$50,000.
