|  |  Goroka ShowThe gathering of clans for the Goroka show is the most spectacular in Papua New Guinea and a world-class cultural event. From mud men to birds of paradise, it is an exotic and surreal show of music, dance and costumes.An unofficial competition of drumming and dance ability, volume and agility celebrates the diversity of this region, which was first stumbled on by gold miners in the 1930s.
The tradition began in the 1950s as a meeting for clans and tribes. Some 40,000 highlanders now attend and the event attracts thousands of foreign visitors. Among the performers are the famous Asaro Mud Men, who cleverly gained the upper hand when they first appeared as ghostly apparitions before a rival tribe.
Surrounding Goroka are coffee plantations and the kind of beautiful mountain scenery you'd hope for in a place this remote. The town has some tourist hotels, but be sure to book flights and accommodation early. It is most accessible by air from Port Moresby, Mt Hagen and other regional centres, and there is a bus service to Lae. |
