|  | Finland Ice MarathonThousands of blades hit the frozen surface of Kuopio's Lake Kallavesi for the annual Ice Marathon, which begins with the school skating competitions. Highlights include a competition to see who can go the fastest over the 2km or 12.5km distance.When the kids have had their fun, it's down to more serious business as skaters compete in the 200km event, part of the Finnish National Championship. There is also slightly less intense action in the 100km, 50km, 25km and 12.5km keep-fit events. The keep-fit series has become a firm favourite and is now the marathon's largest event.
There is also team relay racing, both competitive and for fun. Perhaps the highlight of the day though is the Mini-Marathon, where the youngest participants attempt to complete the 500m course. |
