For many, Happo One Mountain Resort is for many the jewel of this mountainous region's seven resorts.Happo One Mountain Resort (not "1" but "o-nay") is known as a place for serious skiers. This is less snowboard-friendly than many other resorts (which is a bonus for those who prefer the traditional two skied approach to getting down a mountain). There are a great selection of runs including gentle slopes for beginners while experienced skiers get to enjoy more challenging moguls and powder snow of the highest quality. It was these slopes that played host to the Super-G, downhill and ski jumping competitions of the 1998 Winter Olympics.
The village of Happo One Mountain Resort is a treat in itself with its Disney-like, mock Tudor buildings dotted along a narrow winding road packed with all the ingredients for some serious après fun, not to mention some fantastic traditional Japanese cuisine.
Happo One Mountain Resort is definitely world-class with all the trimmings but its popularity can be a major drawback. One visitor recommended avoiding weekends as "it's like a crowd leaving a football match". Come Monday morning however, you have the slopes virtually to yourself. Once you're there the efficiency of the Japanese train system allows you to explore the Nagano region with ease and visit all the resorts in the area if the urge takes you. |

By Train: take the JR Ooto line to Hakuba Station. From there it is a five-minute taxi ride. Alternatively you can catch a bullet train from Tokyo to Nagano City, then transfer onto a bus for Hakuba. There are also a number of tourist buses departing every day from Tokyo, Nagoya, Oosaka and other areas heading for Hakuba.
By Car: From Tokyo take the Kanetsu Expressway until the Fujioka Junction where you change to the Joetsu Expressway and continue until Koshoku. You can receive a map at the toll gate with directions to Hakuba via the Olympic Highway. (Approx. 4hrs)
From Nagoya and other Southern regions take the Chuo Expressway and exit at Toyoshina. From there you can take either route 147 or 148 to Hakuba. (Approx. 3 1/2hrs from Nagoya). A map should be available at the Toyoshino exit. |
