|  |  Red Rock MuseumThe non-profit Red Rock Museum is dedicated to educating the public about southwestern Native American culture thorough the display of various handicrafts and artwork.The museum itself is located within Red Rock State Park in Gallup, New Mexico. Its collection is filled with a chronological arrangement of stone tools, baskets, pottery and metal tools from the ice age to the present. Also on display are rare Zuni Kachina dolls, needlepoint, inlay jewellery, pueblo pottery and hand-loomed rugs.
With over 640 acres to choose from, Red Rock State Park is an integral part of any journey to the American Southwest. The red cliffs of the Park began forming 205 million years ago during the age of the dinosaurs. The early inhabitants of the area, the Anasazi, were a prehistoric farming culture which lived there from 300 to 1200AD. From the 18th century to the present, the region has been sparsely inhabited by the Navajo Indians.
In addition to the displays, the museum gift shop has various Native American arts and crafts, Navajo & Zuni jewellery, CDs and tapes of Native American music and books on Navajo & Pueblo culture, as well as on the history the Southwest. Truly enlightening. |
