| | Broken ColumnThe creator of the Angel of the North and Field for the British Isles, Antony Gormley has smattered the city of Stavanger with Broken Column, 23 identical sculptures - each a cast of his own body.Conceived as a radical approach to public sculpture, the works are situated in various unusual and unexpected locations, including a nuclear shelter, a private home, a swimming pool, a boutique and even a secondary school classroom.
If placed head-to-toe in a column, the sculptures would measure out the distance between two axis points of the city - the Rogaland Art Museum, where the work starts, and the Natvigs Minde, in the harbour, the site for the final work. From museum to sea, the sculptures establish a broken column of figures, all measuring 1.95m tall and facing 10 degrees west. The project, which has taken four years to realise since its inception in 1999, elicits an infiltration into the fabric of the city, an arresting and sometimes uncanny presence in both the public and private sphere. |
