| | New Zealand International Arts FestivalThis important biennial international arts festival in Wellington brings together the best home-grown and touring talent in the Southern Hemisphere. A Fringe Festival runs concurrently with the main celebration of performing arts, visual arts, music, literature and dance. The New Zealand International Arts Festival was first held in 1986 and over the years the programme has reflected the interests and expertise of its various artistic directors.
Lissa Twomey curated her first New Zealand International Arts Festival in 2008, programming drama performances such as Blackwatch and Three Sisters, music by jazz musician Ornette Coleman and some film and music magic in ChaplinOperas, with Benedict Mason's score accompanying three classic Chaplin shorts.
In the literary arena, writer Ian McEwan (author of Atonement and On Chesil Beach) appeared in literary discussions The Art of Unease and Don't Mention the War.
Brand new in 2008 was New Zealand's first ever writing marathon, Once Upon a Deadline. Six writers were sent to a range of locations in Wellington, armed only with a laptop and their creative writing skills. They had one day to compose a story of 1200 words, inspired by their surroundings, and present their works at a "read-off", where the winner was decided. As it happened, there was a disparity between the judges (who chose David Geary as the winner) and the audience (who gave the People's Choice award to Ellie Catton).
For breaking news about the 2010 festival, keep an eye on the New Zealand International Arts Festival website. In the meantime, the festival organisers are kept busy in running the Lexus Song Quest, which takes place in non-Festival years. Previous winners have included Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Malvina Major, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Jonathan Lemalu. Finally the New Zealand Fringe Festival takes place every year. |
