    When opened on 10 May 2003, the Christchurch Art Gallery or <i>Te Puna o Waiwhetu</i> became home to one of New Zealand's most important public art collections of British and European paintings. Its Maori name honours the well on the gallery's site, which flows into the city's Avon River, with <i>Waiwhetu</i> also meaning "water in which stars are reflected." The Gallery's striking modern architecture was designed by the Buchan Group after an international competition.

    Just 13 years after the official British settlement of Christchurch in 1850 an English oak tree was planted there (9 July 1863) in honour of the Prince Albert Edward's marriage to Danish Princess Alexandra. Thus Christchurch's Botanic Gardens were inaugurated and since 1946 have been in the care of Christchurch City Council. Encompassing an area of 30 hectares (74 acres), mostly bordered by a loop of the Avon River, the once wetland area has been transformed into one of New Zealand's finest collections of exotic and indigenous plants, with towering trees well over a century old and welcoming lawns. An ideal place to recharge the batteries.
