Christchurch Botanic Gardens | Christchurch Botanic Gardens Daily Just 13 years after the official British settlement of Christchurch in 1850 an English oak tree was planted there (9 July 1863) in honour of the Prince Albert Edward's marriage to Danish Princess Alexandra. Thus Christchurch's Botanic Gardens were inaugurated and since 1946 have been in the care of Christchurch City Council. Encompassing an area of 30 hectares (74 acres), mostly bordered by a loop of the Avon River, the once wetland area has been transformed into one of New Zealand's finest collections of exotic and indigenous plants, with towering trees well over a century old and welcoming lawns. An ideal place to recharge the batteries. |
International Antarctic Centre | International Antarctic Centre Daily Reflecting a century of Antarctic exploration that has passed through Christchurch (Scott on both Discovery and Terra Nova in 1901 and 1910, Shackleton on Nimrod in 1907 and, from 1955, the USA's Operation Deep Freeze flights), Christchurch International Airport Limited's International Antarctic Centre opened on 28 September 1900.
