The Memphis in May International Festival ends on a musical note with an <i>al fresco</i> concert given by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. After a month of festivities, Sunset Symphony features many loved melodies and a fabulous firework display over the Mississippi.

The Italian community celebrates its heritage at Marquette Park's annual Memphis Italian Festival. National and local artists perform and there is, of course, a great selection of food available from outdoor vendors and at a more formal indoor Italian dinner.

Not actually an island but a peninsular, Mud Island is a popular getaway for Memphis locals. As well as a number of bike trails, it is also possible to hire a pedal boat or raft here.

The magic of Elvis Presley remains at Graceland, in South Memphis, once home to the King of Rock 'n' Roll, preserved as it was when Elvis lived there. The home includes an extensive museum of memorabilia, costumes and Elvis' grave.

Site of Stax Records, the Stax Museum downtown honours all the artists that recorded there with interactive and historical exhibits and film clips. There's also music by the likes of Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and Ike and Tina Turner.

The Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King was assassinated, forms part of the National Civil Rights Museum. Exhibits at this South Main museum detail the 1960s battle for equality, King's life and death, and the ongoing fight for civil rights.
