Johnstown is a Pennsylvania town rich in history and full of natural charm. Situated 70 miles east of Pittsburgh, this mining and steel town has a rich history and a number of things to see and enjoy. Book a room at one of our Johnstown, PA hotels and discover it all, including:
One of Johnstown’s claims to fame is the Johnstown Inclined Plane. This inclined railway was originally built to help evacuate Johnstown’s citizens in the case of a flood, and currently holds the world record for the steepest vehicular inclined plane. Climb on board for a ride and enjoy spectacular views of Johnstown and the valley below.
If you want to have some outdoor family fun in the summer months, head over to Coal Tubin’. Rent tubes or a raft and float down the Stonycreek River, with convenient drop off and pickup by Coal Tubin’s friendly staff.
One of the key events in Johnstown’s history was “The Great Johnstown flood of 1889”, and the Johnstown Flood Museum provides visitors a great way to glimpse back into how the tragedy affected the community. Watch an informative movie about the flood, its causes and aftermath, and see some artifacts related to the flood from 1889.
If you want to get a broader sense of the history of Johnstown, head over to the Heritage Discovery Center for great exhibits as well as the Johnstown Children’s Museum. The center has exhibits covering the history of Johnstown’s mining and steel industries and delves into what life was like for immigrants in the area during the 1800’s. Another highlight of the Discovery Center is the Johnstown Children’s Museum, which allows children to explore and interact with the history of Johnstown through activities like “The Inclimber” play space and much more.
Next, head over to the Grandview Cemetery and explore its 235-acre grounds. The centerpiece of the cemetery is the 20,000-square-foot plot for the 755 unidentified victims of the 1889 flood. The plot also has a 21’ high granite memorial dedicated to these victims, flanked by statues dedicated to the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity.
Finally, take in a show at the Historical Arcadia Theater. Built in 1921, this renovated historical performing arts space lets you enjoy a concert or play in the same theater Johnstown residents did more than 90 years ago.
