Founded in 1872, Joplin was named after the Methodist Reverend Harris Joplin. Mineral mining brought a population boom to the area in the early 1900s. It was considered the lead and zinc mining capital of the world for more than 40 years, but today most of the mines are deserted. Joplin is best known for being prominently named in Bobby Troup's famous song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66." The legendary town usually has visitors staying at Joplin hotels conveniently close to the historic highway.
