For a town sitting on the northern rim of the Great Black Swamp, the Maumee River was Perrysburg’s saving grace allowing it to become an early distribution center sending furs and dried meat out and bringing household goods and other foodstuffs in. Eventually Perrysburg became a major lake port and shipbuilding center, ranking right behind Cleveland and Buffalo. This history will come alive for you and your family when you stay at Perrysburg hotels and explore the many things to see and do here, which include:
Start your stay in Perrysburg at the 577 Foundation for a step back into the past—and a look into the future. Once a large estate, the space was donated with the exhortation, “Whatever we do here, let's be educational, environmental, experimental, and let's have fun.” And you will do just that as you see how old buildings have been repurposed—the carriage house is now a used-book shop, the machinery shop is a space for nonprofit meetings, you can learn about making pottery in what was once the cow barn, and so on. There is a geodesic biodome, community gardens, Did’s Dig (where you can play archaeologist and take your finds home) and a playground. Take a walk along the river, check out the bird blinds and the honeybees and find your way through the maze for a full day of fun.
If you would like more history, then visit the Fort Meigs State Memorial, the largest wooden-walled fortification in North America. The War of 1812 will come alive for you and your family as you examine the museum’s artifacts before proceeding out into the fort itself, where you can imagine what life might have been like in these blockhouses surveying the river below. Your kids might like the “wheel of fortune” that determines a death they might have met during that period, covering options from lockjaw to bullet wounds.
Take a break from history and check out Levis Commons, a small outdoor mall where specialty shops and independent merchants replace the usual chain stores. There are some great restaurants and a movie theater here as well. No matter when you are visiting, there is sure to be a special event. Check the website for a schedule.
If you are ready for some outdoor fun, then it is time to go paddle-boating at Three Meadows Park. Located near the historic district, Three Meadows is popular with visitors and locals alike for picnicking, playing horseshoes, fishing and paddle-boating. There are grills and picnic tables onsite, so bring food and spend a relaxing day here with your family.
Speaking of the historic district, it is well worth a visit as well. The area around Louisiana Avenue and Front Street is filled with buildings in different stages of historic preservation. You can trace the city’s 175-year history through its architecture as you stroll through these streets, perhaps imagining the lives of those who strolled them before you.
Finally, you may want to just unwind, and if you are a golfer there is no better place to relax than at the Crosswinds Golf Course, which advertises itself as a “family-driven” golf course. If you are going to be in town for a while, the course offers a “first tee” program for kids between the ages of five and 15. Crosswinds also is active in Project Gain, accessible golf for players with disabilities, and participates in a program called Get Golf-Ready in Five Days, a program to either start new players or rev up those who abandoned the game.
Perrysburg gives visitors the opportunity to step back in history and gain an understanding of the War of 1812, yet the city also is forward-looking and filled with modern and historic points of interest. Stay with Choice Hotels in Perrysburg, Ohio, where you will always have a warm Midwestern welcome and can explore a city with much to offer.
