Delaware has so much to please any visitor including great weather, clean beaches, shopping with no sales tax and easy access to Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. Rehoboth Beach has earned its moniker of the “Nation’s Summer Capital.” It is exactly what you want a beach town to be. Book now at one of our Rehoboth Beach hotels, stroll through the lovely downtown area and enjoy all the fun and activities this “summer capital” has to offer, which includes:
Park your car and forget about it. Rehoboth Beach is for walking and bicycling, so head over to Atlantic Cycles for the cleanest and best-maintained bicycles anywhere, along with accoutrements like helmets, shoes, pumps, water bottles and detailed maps for non-traditional bike rides and exploring. Depending on your family’s needs, there are a number of vehicle choices: tandems, one- and three-speed bicycles, child attachments, road bikes, hybrids and surreys are all available.
What is a beach without a boardwalk, and what is a boardwalk without a fantastic family amusement center? That’s what you’ll find at Funland, with 18 rides, 13 midway games, an electronic shooting gallery, Skeeball and an arcade with video and pinball machines. The area is always spotlessly clean and well-maintained, and there are rides for children and adults of all ages. Funland will transport you back to your own childhood.
Ready for some fun that is a little less active? Then check out Clear Space Theatre Company, located in an old Methodist church, where you will be able to sit back and enjoy a fantastic show, no matter when you are visiting. The theatre’s motto is that it brings “artistic endeavors of integrity and risk,” and it lives up to its mission, with shows ranging from Camelot and Avenue Q to Radio Gaga and The Foreigner. The summer repertory season is especially exciting, with its rotation of three popular Broadway shows specifically targeting visitors. But there are musicals, plays, children’s theatre and more all year round, so be sure to check out the schedule when you arrive. Bar service and food are available, and there is not a bad seat in the house. The theater even runs a thrift shop so stop by and pick something up: you will have a souvenir that supports the arts!
Before there was the Coast Guard, there was the United States Life-Saving Service. You will learn about it and the “Surf Men” who worked for it when you visit the Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum at Delaware Seashore State Park. Watch the video, examine the artifacts and see a demonstration of the hardships men went through to save shipwreck victims. There is a self-guided tour, but the guide is available to answer your questions and does so with enthusiasm. You might want to take the special nighttime tour with lanterns that gives you a real feel for how incredibly difficult the life-saving operation once was.
Once you have rented your bicycles, head out to the Junction and Breakwater Trail, another example of the excellent rails-to-trail program that repurposes old railroad routes into bicycle paths, this time from Rehoboth to Lewes. There are scenic overlooks, a rotating array of wildlife to view and a not-too-challenging 10-mile jaunt that is sure to be within reach of your entire family’s cycling abilities. You will cross an 80-foot long railroad bridge that dates from 1913 and spans Holland Glade, offering beautiful views of Delaware’s famous coastal wetlands.
And of course no visit is complete without an afternoon or early evening spent strolling the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. It is one mile long, fronted with souvenir shops, ice-cream and fried-dough stands and wide enough to accommodate strollers, bicycles, joggers and others. If you are lucky, there will be some free music at the bandstand. Nothing says vacation quite like this experience. Allow yourself to slow down, sit at one of the many benches and people-watch, eat some French fries or salt-water taffy, try your hand at one of the arcades, listen to the laughter around you and take some pictures. This is a time you will always want to remember.
Choice Hotels in Rehoboth Beach will put you right in the middle of this award-winning, five-star beach community, so that you can enjoy all the swimming, sunbathing, amusement rides, theater and just plain relaxation that will make for the most memorable of vacations.
