Since its opening in 1978, the Long Beach Convention Center has become known for its connections to the arts, music and even global sports events.
The exterior wall of the Long Beach Arena features “Planet Ocean”—one of environmental artist Wyland’s “Whaling Walls.” This 116,000 square-foot mural portrays the migratory gray whales and aquatic life of the nearby waters.
A wide variety of concert albums and videos have been recorded at this location, featuring artists such as Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Iron Maiden and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In 1984, the entire facility was busy hosting events of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Volleyball competitions were held at the arena, while the fencing events took place in the center and theatre section.
