In 1890, the Menagerie first opened—informally, with three young cinnamon bears. Growing through donations from prominent individuals, the present facility first opened as a city zoo in 1935. It operated for decades, but closed in 1988 for five years of renovations. The zoo was rededicated as the Prospect Park Wildlife Conservation Society, now part of an integrated system of four zoos and an aquarium managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). However, the “Prospect Park Zoo” name is used interchangeably with the new name.
In addition to caring for its animal residents, the zoo works to restore endangered species populations, operates a wildlife theater, maintains both a community outreach program and volunteer programs (tour guides and educators), and offers a variety of children’s educational programs.
