The Dyersburg Army Air Base serves as home to The Veteran’s Museum, a place to honor all the military that have served in the different conflicts and wars where the United States has been involved. The Museum holds photographs, documentaries, uniforms and countless artifacts from many battles. The friendly staff offers free guided tours. Only a few minutes away there is another historical site of great importance to Dyersburg County, the Confederate Monument. A decorated statue erected in 1905 dedicated to all the Confederate soldiers of Dyersburg County. The statue is made with rocks and it is engraved with a canon and the American flag. The final historical site to visit in Dyersburg is the General Otto French Strahl Memorial. A nice tribute for a Civil War general that lived in this own during the conflict years. The monument is a cannon barrel that sits atop of his grave. General Strahl died in 1864 during the Battle of Franklin while leading his men to the battlefield.
A great educational destination is the Dr. Walter E. David Wildlife Museum which is found on the campus of Dyersburg State Community College. The Museum holds an impressive collection with more than 70 animals from Africa and North America. The main exhibition however is the duck collection as they managed to gather one of every species of ducks in all of the Mississippi Delta. This is a great place to bring the kids and it is open during school hours. Small in size but huge in culture, this city offers a great weekend for the history enthusiasts.
