Things to do in Geelong

Known as the gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula, Geelong offers plenty to enjoy and explore, whether you’re escaping the grind for a weekend or planning a longer getaway. From the wide sparkling waterside to dining, history and art - and plenty of Geelong beach activities to boot - you’re guaranteed a memorable holiday no matter what you’re looking for.

Get a taste of Geelong’s coast and country charm by exploring the town’s lively waterfront. Stretching along Corio Bay past Eastern Beach, the foreshore trail is lined with gardens, cafés and the iconic sea baths and boardwalk. Since the 1930s the art-deco boardwalk has been a local attraction alongside the Giant Sky Wheel and the restored 1892 Geelong Carousel.

For a step through the region’s colourful past follow the Geelong Bollard Trail Walk, where more than 100 colourful, life-sized bollards tell local stories - each bollard represents a different local story, from its indigenous culture to sailors, lifesavers and local personalities. You’ll also see the changing styles of swimming costumes from the 1890s to the 1950s.

Adventure Park Geelong

Only 20 minutes drive from Geelong, and open from November, Geelong’s Adventure Park is Victoria’s biggest water theme park. There are plenty of levels - quite literally - to choose from, ranging from the adrenaline pumping to the relaxed family rides. Experience the Tsunami, Victoria’s only triple-funnel waterslide, which takes you through winding tunnels and whirlpool funnels, plunging you into a swirling rip. For something more relaxing, the Lazy River will take you on a 300m ride past waterfalls with a tropical ambience. 

Looking for treasure? The Amazing Mill Market is a trove of collectables and quirky rarities. Open every day of the year except Christmas, explore the stalls packed with antiques, vintage decor, records, books and fashion - amongst other things. There are also plenty of tasty treats to enjoy. Grab a cup of coffee with some apricot slice at the Rusty Kettle, a local fave that is open for breakfast, brunch and afternoon tea.

MoPA Museum of Play and Art

One of Australia's most acclaimed children's museums, the immersive Museum of Play and Art makes for an awesome outing for kids. Packed with creative spaces that include a hands-on sensory area, MoPA is a colourful hub for kids of any age. There are also Afternoon Art Classes designed for primary-aged children, the Making Monster art sessions and and other opportunities for creativity.

Opened in 1896, the Geelong Gallery is one of Australia’s oldest regional galleries. Its collection spans over 6,000 works of 19th-century Australian works, modern art, and international art, including Australian paintings The Weatherboard Falls (1863) and View of Geelong (1856), and Russell Drysdale’sHill End(1948). There are also regular tours and floor talks by artists and curators.

Established in 1851, the heritage-listed Geelong Botanic Gardens are among the oldest in the country. Take some time to explore this relaxing space, where you can relax in historical and modern gardenscapes, home to from around the world. You can also wander through avenues of themed gardens, and admire exotic and native plants. Covering 200 acres, this is the perfect place for a tranquil retreat close to the city centre.

Old Geelong Gaol

Operated from 1853 to 1991, the three story bluestone Old Geelong Gaol offers a fascinating look back through time. There are some great tours to experience, including the Escape Tour, where historians tell the tales of how men, women and children escaped incarceration, the Locked up with History tour and the the Ghost Tour - a chilling after dark experience that walks through the stories of convicts who once called this gaol home.

For live music Geelong has you sorted. The popular Piano Bar comes alive with music, events and a drinks list to match. From themed soul, funk, and Motown nights to drag shows, piano bands and jazz and blues festivals, this is the nightspot to go to for all range of bands and musicians. Check the calendar to see what’s on and join in the fun. There’s also a pizza bar and plenty of sexy cocktails to enjoy.

A favourite for fresh brews and hearty meals, Little Creatures Brewery is go-to in the historic Valley Worsted Mills of South Geelong. You’ll find a wide range of both signature and seasonal craft creations, including the popular malt-driven White Rabbit Lager, Juicy XPA and Furphy Original. Savour your concoction of choice with a meal from The Canteen menu, where you’ll find pizzas, share plates and other snacks. For those who want a deeper dive there are also tours that will take you behind-the-scenes. 

For a stylish dining experience with a touch of Middle Eastern influences, The Arborist is one of Geelong’s standout restaurants. Situated on Little Malop Street, the innovative menu includes a seasonal starters such as haloumi, hazelnuts and saffron and a main menu that caters for meat and vegetarian options, from the spiced cauliflower and tahini to the lamb with harissa and anchovies. 

Sailors’ Rest

Grab a cocktail (or beer) and sit back to enjoy the views across Corio Bay. Housed in a heritage building originally used by sailors, Sailor’s Rest today offers modern dining with a second-floor lounge and a rooftop bar. A place for couples, families and friends alike, you’ll find a menu that ranges from kids meals to house cocktails, award-winning wines and craft beer.

A great place to kick off the day, Born & Bread Bakehouse is one of the best cafes in Geelong, and known for its friendly vibes, traditional rustic bread (talking spiced fruit, danish rye and more) and pastry treats. Another local fave for catch-ups and downtime is Box Office Cafe, a coffee joint and wine bar with some great breakfast and lunch menus, from fritters to Philly Cheese Steak.
