Locals refer to Elizabethtown by its nickname, “E-town”, or “E’town.” Centrally located in Kentucky at the crossroads of Interstate 65, the Bluegrass Parkway and the Western Kentucky Parkway, E-town is one of the two largest towns between Louisville and Nashville and is the seat of Hardin County. In 1779, three early settlers, Capt. Thomas Helm, Col. Andrew Hynes, and Col. Samuel Haycraft, built forts with block houses to use as stockades for defense against Native Americans. The forts, being one mile apart, formed a triangle. At the time, there were no other settlements between the Ohio River and the Green River, but other people soon came and settled around these forts. In 1793, Colonel Hynes had 30 acres of land surveyed and laid off into lots and streets to establish a town. The town was named in honor of his wife, and Elizabethtown was legally established on July 4, 1797.
There are several interesting historical sites to tour in E-town, including a Georgian mansion built in 1825, which served as a boarding house for years and hosted such dignitaries as General George Armstrong Custer; the Swedish Nightingale, Jenny Lind, who sang on the front steps; and General John Hunt Morgan, of the Confederate Army. The Elizabethtown City Cemetery was established in 1806 and is the final resting place of more than 60 Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. Other landmarks include the Hardin County History Museum, the Historic State Theater, and American Legion Park, which features a nine-hole golf course, four tennis courts, a swimming pool, and children’s playground.
