Tulane is a university of “firsts.” The College of Commerce became the first business school in the South in 1914; 13 years later, the School of Social Work followed suit. The School of Tropical Medicine is the only one of its kind in the country. In 1990, the Tulane University Law School became the first U.S. law school to mandate pro bono work as a graduation requirement. Today, more than 13,000 students attend Tulane, taking courses at schools centered on liberal arts, sciences and specialized professions. The school also offers more than 100 study abroad programs in 40+ countries.
In 1894, Tulane University moved to its present-day uptown campus on historic St. Charles Avenue—just five miles by streetcar from downtown New Orleans. The campus is known for its large live oak trees and architecturally historic buildings. Next to the school is Audubon Park, which features a scenic trail, golf course and lagoon. The Tulane “Green Wave” competes in 16 sports in the Division I American Athletic Conference. Over the years, the school has won national championships in men’s tennis, as well as conference titles in baseball, women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball. In 1998, the men’s football went 12-0 and won the Liberty Bowl.
