A combination of economic depression and religious oppression induced a group of 60 Dutch Calvinist separatists to leave their homeland and seek a better life in America. Led by Albertus C. VanRaalte, they reached their destination on February 9, 1847 on the banks of Black Lake—today’s Lake Macatawa. The Native Americans who already inhabited this area – the Odawa (Ottawa) tribe – were not eager to live in community with the new arrivals; the Dutch eventually purchased the land from the natives, who then moved north. The city was incorporated in 1867. Holland is justifiably proud of its Dutch heritage, and as any visitor during the famous, annual Tulip Time Festival can see, there are literally millions of reasons why! The city imported tulip bulbs from the Netherlands in 1928 and planted them along street curbs and in parks as part of a community beautification project. The first advertisements for Tulip Time appeared in 1930; today people flock from all over to see this gorgeous and colorful display of floral beauty and to enjoy a week’s worth of parades, events, and special attractions.
The rest of the year also offers plenty to do and see in Holland – one of the most popular attractions is Windmill Island Gardens, where visitors can tour five stories of the DeZwaan windmill, the only authentic Dutch windmill operating in the United States. Another favorite landmark is the Big Red Lighthouse, which is Michigan’s most-photographed lighthouse. Among the other interesting and fun places to visit are DeKlomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory, Holland Museum, Nelis’ Dutch Village, and Veldheer Tulip Gardens. Outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers enjoy exploring Holland State Park, Tunnel Park, Mount Pisgah, DeGraaf Nature Center, Outdoor Discovery Center, Sanctuary Woods, Laketown Beach, and Van Raalte Farm.
