The city draws its name from the Tahquamenon River in Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula. Newberry boast a Lake Superior shoreline that offers miles of wilderness beach for kayakers. Oswald’s Bear Ranch is the largest bear ranch in the United States. Since opening to the public in 1997, this complex has grown in size and in bears. The ranch now has 29 black bears, two huge habitats and two smaller ones. This allows visitors to explore the outside of the enclosures and see the bears in their natural environment. Tahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses nearly 50,000 acres and more than thirteen miles of majestic park and includes Whitefish Point and several waterfalls. Most noteworthy is Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls, the second largest waterfall east of the Mississippi (Niagara is its only superior).
The Falls spills over 50,000 gallons of water running 200 feet wide and 48 feet high. This Park also allows you to birdwatch, fish, hike, sight-see, camp, cross-country ski and go snowmobiling. You’ll find wildlife throughout the park like black bear, whitetail deer and moose, along with a variety of birds. Newberry is designated as the Official Moose Capital of Michigan, but sightings aren’t as frequent as that appellation might suggest. Most sightings do occur in the Tahquamenon State Park and north of Newberry. Given their druthers, moose prefer areas associated with water, ponds and swamps.
Get in touch with your inner Paul Bunyan at the Tahquamenon Logging Museum by the Tahquamenon River along this beautiful trail, where blue herons, ducks, birds and other wildlife abound. Within the 20 mile radius of Muskallonge Lake State Park, there are roughly 70 lakes and five rivers plus historic forts and the Father Marquette National Memorial and Museum, a visitor center and monument dedicated to a 17th-century French explorer.
