AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY HOTELS

    New York Hotels

While many people know the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) best from the Night at the Museum movie trilogy, this historic treasure receives about five million visitors annually. One of the largest museums in the world, it was established in 1869, but the building was constructed at its current location (Central Park West at 79th Street in New York City) in 1874. Many visitors know the museum from the movies, which is why one of the tours offered focuses on the real exhibits behind the movie’s main characters. If you’re headed to this iconic attraction on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, book your stay with Choice Hotels. Near the Natural History Museum, there are a variety of hotels to choose from, so you can take your time exploring this popular destination.

TWO MILLION SQUARE FEET OF HISTORY

It was naturalist Dr. Albert S. Bickmore who worked for years to establish a natural history museum in New York, and once he finally got the support of some prominent backers, the governor of New York signed the bill creating the AMNH in 1869.

Located in a park-like campus across from Central Park, there are a variety of hotels near the American Museum of Natural History, which includes 28 interconnected buildings with 45 permanent exhibition halls, plus a planetarium and a library. The AMNH collections contain more than 33 million specimens of animals, fossils, minerals, plants, rocks, cultural artifacts and many other items. Most of these relics sit in storage because only a small fraction can be displayed (given that the collections occupy more than 2,000,000 square feet).  Many of the fossils on display were collected during the 1880s to 1930s, when the museum conducted many worldwide expeditions.

Popular exhibits include the following: Mammal Halls (Old World and New World mammals); Birds, Reptiles and Amphibian Halls; Biodiversity and Environmental Halls; Human Origins and Cultural Halls; Eartha and Planetary Science Halls; and Fossil Halls. Other attractions include the Rose Center for Earth and Space; which features the Hayden Planetarium; the Exhibitions Lab, which integrates new research into state-of-the-art multimedia presentations; and the Research Library, which is open to the public.

There are a variety of self-guided tours available to the public, such as: Dino Tour, Earth and Space Tour, Highlights Tour, Theodore Roosevelt Tour and the Whales Tour. Visitors also have several dining options to choose from for a snack or a large sit-down meal.
