This iconic landmark was conceived and built in the mid 1800’s by a French sculptor named Frederic Bartholdi. The statue itself is a depiction of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, and is thought to have been given to America by the French as a gift to honor the Union’s victory in the American Civil War and the end of slavery. The statue and island it is stationed on, was classified as a national monument in 1924 and has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

The most popular attraction is the view from the crown, this attraction requires a 22 story climb up a spiral stair case that ends in panoramic views of New York Harbor and parts of New York City.
