Originally named Toisnot, this community was formed around the Toisnot Primitive Baptist Church, which was built in the early 1800s. The town was renamed in honor of Louis Dicken Wilson, who had been a North Carolina politician and general in the U.S. Army. He had served in the General Assembly of North Carolina and the North Carolina Senate in various terms between 1814 and 1846, and then gone on to fight in the Mexican–American War. Wilson contracted yellow fever while fighting and passed away in 1847. The North Carolina General Assembly chartered the town on January 29, 1849, incorporating it as a farm market.Visitors to Wilson have a wide variety of interesting and fun activities to choose from.
