Originally a wide-open prairie, the land that Katy is situated on was once the feeding grounds of large buffalo herds and flocks of wild birds; home to deer, longhorn cattle, and wolves; and the hunting ground of Native Americans, the Karankawa tribe. In the mid-1800s, the earliest settlers called their community Cane Island, named for the creek that runs through the area. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT, nicknamed “The Katy”) began operations through the community in 1895, the same year that James Oliver Thomas laid out and platted a townsite.
