EXPLORING HISTORY AND NATURE IN SPRINGFIELD
Springfield was still a young town when the Civil War took place, and was the site of a skirmish in 1861, as well as a Confederate raid in 1863. Thankfully, Springfield has been a peaceful setting ever since; one where both history and modern conveniences coexist.
One of the most historic sites—and best-kept secrets—in Springfield is the Sydenstricker Schoolhouse. Built in 1928, it served as the center of education and social activities in the community for many years. But as housing developments surrounded it over the years, the schoolhouse was mostly forgotten—until it was purchased at public auction by the Upper Pohick Community League. It’s currently used as a community hall, and has hosted parties, social and civic events ever since. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s a unique place to visit and soak up some local history.
As the town’s residential population grew, the opening of the Springfield Mall—now the Springfield Town Center—helped Springfield became a major retail destination. As one of the largest malls in northern Virginia, the center includes more than 200 stores and services. Hotels in Springfield, VA are convenient places to stay if you’ve got shopping to do!
