With a length of nearly 10 miles and a depth of 300 feet, this lake is the second largest in Glacier National Park. It sits at an altitude of more than 4,400 feet, and it’s located on the east side of the park along Going-to-the-Sun Road. Because of its high altitude and its location on the eastern side of the park (which is more windy than the western half), the lake is often too cold to swim in and the winds can make the water rough; however some visitors do enjoy taking a canoe or kayak out to go sightseeing. Guided boat tours are also offered. Hiking trails along the lake include Gunsight Lake Trail, Okotomi Lake Trail and Piegan Pass Trail. You can also drive along the lake to enjoy spectacular views – and you may be able to see local wildlife like elk, mule deer, grizzly bears and black bears.
To get more information about the lake and this section of the park, visit the St. Mary Visitor Center. During the summer, the center hosts the Native America Speaks program, where members of the Blackfeet, Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille tribes share information about Native American history and culture.
