Officially named City of San Buenaventura, this oceanside town was founded as a mission in 1782 by Father Junipero Serra, the first leader of the Franciscans in California. The mission was named for St. Bonaventure, a 13th-century Franciscan saint; thus the nickname that Ventura has is the “city of good fortune.” The city was incorporated in 1866 and became the county seat in 1873. An oil strike in 1914 fueled rapid growth, and in the years following World War II, farmland gave way to outward suburban development. It remained a somewhat isolated and rural community for much of the 20th century, up until the 1960s, when the four-lane Ventura Highway (Highway 101) was completed and expanded. Ventura County was settled atop the very fertile soil of the Santa Clara River Valley, where the best citrus groves in the state of California are located and which spawned the well-known Sunkist Growers organization.

The Olivas Adobe, one of the early “California Rancho”-styled homes, now operates as a museum and is one of the most-visited historic sites on the Pacific Coast. Living history reenactments, demonstrations of Rancho life, and wonderful ghost stories abound. A summer music series of performances held in the old home's courtyard feature an eclectic assortment of artists from blues to jazz to country. Visitors can also walk through the historic Ortega Adobe, once home to the Ortega family, who are well known for their chili products. Ventura is a classic California beach town, with 13 scenic beach areas and access to fantastic surfing, fishing, camping, whale-watching, harbor cruises, golfing, biking, shopping, hiking, dining, theater, and numerous other recreational activities. It also has the added distinction of being the gateway to the gorgeous Channel Islands National Park. When you have the chance, don’t miss the opportunity to explore Ventura. Hotels in the area allow you to stay conveniently close by to where you want to be. When you stay at Choice Hotels, you can enjoy affordable rates, many amenities, and friendly service.
