The story of Chinatown’s origin claims that a Cantonese businessman named Ah Ken arrived in the area during the 1840s. While it isn’t confirmed, it is believed that Ah Ken owned a small boarding house and rented bunks to Chinese immigrants—earning enough to open a successful Park Row cigar shop that would become the center of growth from where modern-day Chinatown would thrive.
Different areas within Chinatown are known for selling their unique wares. Chinese fish markets and green grocers cluster around Mott Street, Mulberry Street, Canal Street and East Broadway. Jewelers sell their wares in a district on Canal Street between Bowery and Mott. Street vendors congregate on Canal Street west of Broadway, selling handbags, perfumes, sunglasses and watches.
Tourism and restaurants have achieved success in Chinatown.
