Stay in Pelham and discover places to go, shopping and a haunted house! You can go from one extreme to the other in Pelham. Raise your heart-rate at a haunted house and bring it back down on a golf course. Raise it again as you take a riding lesson, and have it drop way down fishing. Whatever you and your heart decide is the best vacation, when you stay at one of the Pelham hotels listed above you will be located in the middle of a number of great activities for everybody.
Be sure to start your adventure at the Oak Mountain State Park by asking for a map—there are a lot of trails, and you don't want to get lost. Use the North Trail Head and connect to any of the four other trails that loop off it. Remember that distances seem longer in the woods, so persevere; and, as always when outdoors, bring plenty of water. In addition to hiking, there is mountain biking and fishing available and beautiful scenery everywhere. Pelham is honored to be home to Wildwood Equestrian, a world-class equestrian institution that trains riders and horses alike for national and international competition. But you do not have to have your eye on show-jumping events to come and spend an afternoon here, either learning the basics of horseback riding, perfecting your advanced techniques or just having some fun.
If you would prefer to go ice skating (yes, you heard that right), Pelham’s Civic Complex hosts the Pelham Ice Arena, a double-sheet ice rink offering public skate times (they will rent you skates) as well as affordable figure skating and hockey lessons.
For a little relaxation of a different sort, the 18-hole “Ballantree” course at the Ballantrae Golf Club features 7,310 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course has a 74.5 general rating and a slope rating of 130 on Bermuda grass. The Ballantrae opened in 2004 and was designed by Robert E. Cupp, ASGCA. Your children will love a visit to the Alabama Wildlife Center, located within Oak Mountain State park, a leader in the rehabilitation of wild birds with a goal of reuniting baby birds with their families. Admission is free and you can learn about the process of working with injured wildlife and how the center’s methods are used in facilities all over the world. Check the online schedule for events and workshops.
