Gold was discovered in the area in 1848 and while Auburn wasn’t a major site for gold mining, it served as an important trading and supply post for the prime gold fields nearby. When the railroad depot arrived in1865, the city also became a transportation hub. You can stroll through the streets of Old Town Auburn to see historic structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Commercial Street is lined with buildings from the 1850s that have not changed much since then. Read the plaques on each building to learn more about its unique history.
To get even more in-depth in the area’s Gold Rush history, pay a visit to the Gold Country Museum located inside the Gold Country Fairgrounds. At the museum, you can see a miner’s cabin, a mining camp saloon and a replica of a mining tunnel. There’s also an area where you can pan for gold! Those who enjoy endurance events will want to head to the Auburn State Recreation Area. It’s the site of more sporting endurance events than anywhere else in the world. This includes the Western States Endurance Run, American River 50 Mile Endurance Run and the Auburn International Half-Ironman Triathlon.
