This quiet community in Orange County is located three miles southeast of Cerritos and seven miles west of Anaheim. Originally inhabited by the Gabrieleno Indians, it was controlled by the Spanish government until Mexico became independent in 1821. Most of the land was purchased by an American and sold it to the Robinson Trust. The community was incorporated as Dairy City in 1956 but by the 1970s all the dairies were gone and it was renamed Cypress after the Cypress Elementary School. While in Cypress you’ll have access to all of Orange County’s theme parks like Disney, museums like Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana, beaches like Newport, Laguna Beach and Huntington and entertainment venues like Segerstrom Center for the Arts. That’s in Costa Mesa, where you can also enjoy upscale-luxury shopping at South Coast Plaza, the largest mall on the West Coast. Its sales of over $1.5 billion annually are the highest in the United States.
To the Northwest there is Los Alamitos, home or the world-class equine racing at Los Alamitos Race Course and Rancho Los Alamitos, an early 19th century adobe ranch house that still stands today with its historic gardens that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Also on the grounds is a museum which presents the history of the rancho era, the country house era and the region. If you enjoy exotic gardens, The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden encompassing 1.3 acres on the campus of California State University, Long Beach, in Long Beach, California, USA. It was dedicated in 1981.
