FUN TIMES ON LAND, SEA AND AIR
Located along the central cost of California, Marina is eight miles north of Monterey and eight miles west of Salinas. One of its more prominent attractions is Marina State Beach, popular with surfers for its reliable waves, as well as a haven for hang gliding, paragliding and kite flying. Fort Ord Dunes State Park—formerly an Army practice firing range—includes a boardwalk, a four-mile trail for walking and biking, and exhibits detailing its previous use as a military training area.
The city also includes part of the California State University, Monterey Bay campus, the UC-Monterey Bay Education, Science and Technology Center of UC Santa Cruz, and the Veterans Transition Center. The Fort Ord Station Veterinary Hospital—which was built in 1941 and provided healthcare for U.S. Army animals like horses and mules—was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
There’s even more natural beauty at the 367-acre Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge, just four miles north of Marina. The refuge was established in 1974 to provide a home for several threatened and endangered species, and is also used by a variety of migratory birds at various times during the year.
Racing fans of all kinds will want to drive 20 minutes south—while obeying the speed limit—to the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Used for both auto racing and motorcycle racing, this paved road racing track was built in 1957 and features a signature turn—the downhill-plunging “Corkscrew.”
