This historic pier is located in Redondo Beach, California and stretches out onto the Pacific Ocean. It measures 70,000 square feet and sits 25 feet above the water. By the time the city celebrated its centennial in 1992, its coastline had seen at least seven piers. While the official name is "Municipal Pier," it has also been called the "Endless Pier." Earlier versions were known as "Pleasure Pier" and "Horseshoe Pier." In 1889, the pier was a wharf at the foot of Emerald Street, designed to handle the enormous lumber trade from the Pacific Northwest. What appeared to be several disjointed wharves at the end of the 19th century evolved into an interconnected structure. A series of storms and demolitions throughout the 20th century resulted in the pier's modern reinforced concrete version, which was completed in 1995. This restructuring has brought back the appeal to the city's business district and ever since it has remained a popular destination place for locals and visitors, providing venues for sport fishing, as well as dining, shopping and entertainment. Be sure you bring a cooler when you go to the seafood market on the pier’s lower level so you can chose fresh crabs, mussels, clams, fish all to take home or to be cooked for you to eat right on the pier. All kinds of ocean oriented activities from sport fishing, boat rides and water sports to seasonal whale watching excursions are available from the Redondo Beach Marina. When the sun sinks into the horizon, you might want to try your hand at twilight fishing or just lay down your reel and take a leisurely walk in the cool.
