The land where Santa Clara is located was originally inhabited by the Ohlone tribe of Native Americans. The first European to arrive to the area was Jose Francisco Ortega, who was scouting land for the Spanish. Franciscan “padres” (priests) established the eighth of their 21 missions along the California coast here; they named it Mission Santa Clara de Asis in honor of Saint Clare. The mission was founded on January 12, 1777. Although control of Mission Santa Clara was taken from the padres in 1836 and turned over to civil commissioners who were supposed to oversee the "return of the land to the native population," that never happened. The fertile land and mild climate attracted ranchers and farmers, and the town began to be settled in the 1850s. Santa Clara College was established on the old mission site in 1851; it is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state.
Santa Clara was incorporated as a town on July 5, 1852 and became a state-chartered city in 1862. Visitors to Santa Clara today have a wide array of fun and exciting things to do.
