The stunning red rock formations in this park were created during a geological upheaval along a natural fault line millions of years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that prehistoric people were in this area about 1330 B.C., and that Native American people were here circa 250 B.C. Several Native American tribes have reported a connection to this area, including Ute, Comanche, Apache, Kiowa, Shoshone, Cheyenne, Pawnee and Lakota people. Petroglyphs that are typical of early Utes have been found in the park. The area was first called Red Rock Corral, but in August of 1859, two surveyors who helped to establish Colorado City explored the site. One of the surveyors, M. S. Beach, suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden." His companion, Rufus Cable, “a young and poetic man” who was awestruck by the impressive rock formations, exclaimed, "Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the gods to assemble!” And thus, the area has been known as such ever since. The land on which this incredibly beautiful park is located was donated to the city of Colorado Springs in 1909 by the family of Charles Elliott Perkins. The land came with the stipulation that it should remain a free, public park. The city subsequently purchased additional, surrounding land, and the park’s size grew to 1,367 acres.The park was designated a U.S. National Natural Landmark in 1971 – a testament to its unique and spectacular beauty.
