This lakeshore has the distinction of being the first officially designated national lakeshore in the U.S. It’s named after the 50 – 200 foot sandstone cliffs that tower over Lake Superior. Natural forces like waves and weather conditions have molded the cliffs into caves, arches, turrets and other formations. They are called “Pictured Rocks” because of the mineral deposits that have left streaks of spectacular colors over time. Iron, copper, manganese and limonite are the most common minerals found here, adding colors like red, orange, blue, green, brown, black and white to the rock formations.
The lakeshore offers around 90 miles of trails within its 43,000 acres. These include nature trails and trails that lead to breathtaking views of the lakeshore’s waterfalls. If you want to view the area by boat, the National Parks Service has an authorized concessioner that operates a boat tour (during certain months) where you can experience a narrated tour of the cliffs while cruising along Lake Superior. The tour is approximately 40 miles round-trip and lasts for 2 ½ to 3 hours.
