Known as the preeminent historical city on Oregon’s coast, Astoria is the oldest settlement west of the Mississippi River. Lewis & Clark spent the winter of 1805-1806 at nearby Fort Clatsop after following the Columbia River to its terminus in the Pacific Ocean. American investor John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company sent the Astor Expedition to the area in 1810, and it founded Fort Astoria in 1811 as its primary fur-trading post in the Northwest. An extremely important post for American exploration of the continent, this first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast was influential in establishing American claims to the land. The first U.S. Post Office west of the Rocky Mountains was established in Astoria in 1847, and the city was incorporated in 1876.
