ANOTHER HISTORIC AMERICAN INSTITUTION
The American University was actually established by an Act of Congress in 1893, upon the bill’s approval by President Benjamin Harrison. Today, more than 11,000 students attend the university’s six schools—which includes the globally-ranked School of International Service and the Washington College of Law. The university is located just five miles northwest of downtown Washington, D.C. and includes both the main campus and the Tenley Campus, which houses the recently-built law school.
Notable campus sites include the 5,000-seat Bender Arena, where many of the school’s athletics programs compete in the Division I Patriot League, an outdoor amphitheater, and the Katzen Arts Center, which is home to the Departments of Performing Arts, Studio Arts, Graphic Design, Art History, and the American University Museum. Thanks to its wide variety of foreign and exotic plants and trees, American University’s campus has been designated a public garden and arboretum by the American Public Garden Association. In addition, the university recently completed construction of a solar farm—in conjunction with George Washington University—which now provides 50% of the school’s energy, which helps make progress toward the goal of carbon neutrality by the year 2020.
