On top of the south end of Lookout Mountain in Georgia is an area filled with natural rock formations and vast gardens. Although the name suggests a city of rocks, the area has a lookout area, tours, birds of prey shows, trails and, of course, a garden. The rocky area was once inhabited by Native Americans in the early 1820s and was also the site of the Battle of Lookout Mountain during the American Civil War. John Garnet Carter, and American inventor and entrepreneur turned the mountain into an attraction in the 20th century where he built a miniature golf course, now recognized as the nation’s first mini golf course. Carter later sold his mini golf patent and used his fortune to build the Rock City that exists today.
This attraction has a 4,100-foot walking trail that showcases its natural caves, gardens, rock formations and waterfalls like Ruby Falls. Perhaps its most famous attraction is Lover’s Leap, which has a beautiful view of the High Falls of Lookout Mountain. Although the downtown area of Chattanooga, Tennessee is six miles from the garden, it can be seen along with six other states from the peak of Lookout Mountain. Brave the 200-foot long Swing-A-Long Bridge or take self-guided tours along the edge of Lookout Mountain for a bird’s-eye view of the land. It can be hard to match a place like Rock City Garden.
