Start your trip by taking a stroll through the Downtown Quincy Historic District. It features examples of 19th century and early 20th century architecture in a rage of architectural styles. The Quincy Post Office is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1877 and constructed in the Chateauesque style. The State Street Loan and Trust Building is also a designated historic place. It was designed in 1892 in a Romanesque Revival style, and an extension was added in 1906. In addition to these buildings, there are many other structures lining the downtown area that provide a glimpse into the city’s past.
Just south of downtown is the South Side German Historic District. The neighborhood highlights the influence of the German immigrants who arrived here in the mid-1800s. It features German-style architecture, and notable sites in the area include the Eighth Street Business District, State Room theater and the Dick Brothers Brewery Building. History buffs will want to stop by South 6th Street where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held their sixth debate during the 1858 U.S. Senate race. Just steps away from that spot you’ll find the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Interpretive Center, where you can learn more about Lincoln’s life and legacy in this part of the state.
